How we replaced paper testing records in railway signalling with a live, tamper-evident digital audit trail.
Context
Before the agency, we built the tool
Before Kontinuity built assistants for the trades, we built Tracer — a real-time testing and commissioning record tool for railway signalling.
Tracer is our own product, not a client commission. We're showing it because it's the clearest evidence of how we build — and because railway signalling is about as demanding as regulated work gets.
The problem
Paper records that couldn't keep up
Signalling testing runs on records. Every test, every result, every signature is evidence that the railway is safe to use. For decades that has meant paper: printed test logs, spreadsheets, and ring-binders filled in by hand on site, carried back to the office and filed.
Records get damaged, duplicated or lost. Managers can't see progress without chasing someone on the phone. And when an auditor asks a question two years later, the answer is in a box somewhere.
What we built

Tracer puts the whole record chain on the device already in the tester's pocket. Test records are logged as the work happens, and every entry lands in a permanent digital audit trail that can't be quietly edited after the fact. Managers see progress and blockers in real time instead of at the end of the week. The ring-binder is gone.
How it runs
Boring technology. Reliably.
Built on dependable technology — the same kind we use for everything: a Python backend, a proper database, and a web app that installs like a phone app and keeps working with no signal, because depots and worksites don't come with good wi-fi. It syncs when the connection comes back. Nothing exotic. Exotic breaks.
Why this matters for trades
Railway auditing is unforgiving paperwork
Railway commissioning is safety-critical, heavily audited, zero tolerance for a missing record. Chasing your invoices and tracking your EICR dates is not going to scare tooling built to that standard.
